O.H. Corral Broodmare - Picture Gallery

The Broodmares at the O.H. Corral hold equal importance with the stallions. We believe that the Bottom Line (female line) holds huge importance in the breeding picture of a horse. So many people put importance all or mainly on the stallion. For a sire to be good, his traits can only be passed on by genetics, and if his traits show through, he is genetically potent. While the traits in the mare’s bloodlines have to be strong, we believe that the mare will be the overall teacher of the resulting foal.

In starting our breeding program, we selected a small number of mares with bloodlines that traced closely back to the founders of the breed, and the bloodlines that were consistently winning year after year. We selected mares of ‘working’ blood and ‘sprint’ blood. We wanted the strong influence of “Leo”, “Go Man Go” and “Jet Deck” in our mare line to cross with the “Hollywood Return” in our stallion line. Now into the second stage of our breeding program, we are starting to breed the daughters, retained from these mares.

At present we are double-crossing some of our mares to preserve the “Hollywood” traits – cow sense, intelligence, trainability, bone structure. This will then produce horses that can be outcrossed again to the somewhat closed in genetic pool that is available today.

We invite you to take the opportunity to read the upcoming book “Australian Legends” written and compiled by Karen Thrun, due to be released at the NCHA Cutting Futurity in August – a great read and important reference to the Quarter Horse Bloodlines.
